xii, 471pp; iv, 467pp. Contemporary full dark purple calf elaborately decorated in gold and blind on the sides, gilt stamped edges, gilt inside dentelles, spine decorated in gold and with brown morocco labels lettered in gold. Marbled endpapers, edges stained red. Engraved frontispiece, eight inserted plates (one in color), and large folding map of travels and discoveries in volume one; engraved frontispiece, folding map of Lake Tchad and folding map of Central Africa in volume two. Previous owners' names on the front free endpapers and flyleaves, light rubbing and wear to covers. In all a nice, very good+ set. Graesse II.361.; Octavo
