Arnhem Ioannem Ianssonium 1614-7 First Edition Hardcover Five parts in one volume. Text in Latin. Contemporary full brown calf with five raised bands, gold lettering and gold decorations on the spine, edges stained red, marbled pastedown endpapers. Leaves measure 27 x 17.5 cm. Calf shows some wear but overall in very good condition, the corner of one leaf is torn. The book was professionally restored. There are many differences between copies of this title which differ in number of plates included. Unless otherwise specified the title pages, etc., follow the copy catalogued in Hunt Botanical Catalogue 199. This copy is as follows: BOOK I. VER. i. Title page (blank on verso); ii. Hepatica flore niveo w/ engraved garden on verso; iii. 51 numbered plates - plates #10 and 25 have been excised -- the last description in Latin is numbered 52. BOOK II. AESTAS. i. Title page - Differs slightly from Hunt - with Arnhemi - Ex Officina Ioannis Ianszonij, Anno 1617 (Index Aestivus on verso); ii. Paeonia w/ engraved garden on verso; iii. 20 numbered plates - last leaf is blank on recto. BOOK III. AUTUMNUS. i. Title page (blank on verso); ii. Clematidis altera species w/ engraved garden on verso; iii. 28 plates numbered as follows: number 1 to 11, number 13 to 23, number 12, number 25 (Narcissus marinis), number 24 (Crocus byzantinus), number 25 (Bulbus narcisci marini), Radix cyclamini (marked #13 and 14), Hyacintus germ. (marked d.12 - this is actually part of the Hyems and was bound here incorrectly); iv. Epigramma (blank on verso). BOOK IV. HYEMS. (title page lacking); i.Chamelaea laureola with engraved garden on verso; ii. 12 numbered plates (for plate d.12 see above). BOOK V. ALTERA PARS. i. Title page with Ad Lectorem on verso; ii. Engraved plate Cognoscite Lilia; iii. 61 numbered plates (missing #53) - names of almost all plants inscribed in Latin, French, English and German; Finis Coronat Opus printed on verso of last plate.
